hawaiian pizza

Hawaiian pizza is such a classic with people loving or hating it! With its blend of sweet, salty, fatty, cheesy and delicious goodness…it’s the best budget food ever! I like to think that pepperoni pizza is my favourite flavour pizza but the sweet and savory blend of the Hawaiian is just so good!

Right, lets get to it, we want a really tasty, really cheap, homemade Hawaiian pizza recipe…

This homemade pizza dough recipe is a beginners recipe. Really easy and will always turn out amazing! Iv included my quick fresh pizza sauce here too but check out this page if you want more info on that!

A few questions…

Can I buy budget ham?

We are a budget website and therefore try and do everything as cheap as possible, but we also consider the idea of cost vs quality and the perfect area to explore that subject is meat, and in this particular instance…ham.
When you buy ham in a supermarket, chances are there will be a few different options and various different price points. In short, the more you pay, the better the quality of ham you will purchase. There for, what you can afford to pay for your pizza toppings is completely personal preference but toppings are where all the expense will be as the dough and sauce are so cheap to produce. If you want an incredibly cheap meal go for a cheaper ham and visa versa. I have chosen a medium cost ham in my price comparisons so this pizza could be made much cheaper!

Can I make the hawaiian pizza healthy?

The majority of the calories in this Hawaiian pizza recipe are contained in the base and toppings, therefore you have a couple of options to make it healthier:

  • replace up to half of the white flour in the dough with whole-wheat or brown flour. If you do so you may need a little more water…
  • choose a lower fat cheese option or reduce the amount of cheese you use…
  • choose a lower fat ham option or inturn use a lower fat meat like chicken or turkey…

Do you put pineapple on pizza before or after cooking it?

Before! The sugars in the pineapple will caramelize and concentrate and go all jammy and delicious!

Can you make it a spicy Hawaiian pizza?

Ofcourse!

  • You could sprinkle your favourite hot sauce on before or after baking the pizza…
  • Chopped fresh chilli is a great option sprinkled over the pizza after cooking…
  • You could always choose a spicy ham or chorizo and use that…delicious!

Should I use fresh or canned pineapple?

I tend to use tinned, mainly for convenience and quite often it tastes better once cooked. The price difference is actually very minimal however the fresh pineapple does give you more pineapple for your money.

Can I freeze?

You can most certainly freeze pizza! Great for a snack for the kids…especially as its homemade! Wrap individually in foil in large ziplock bags. To reheat, place the individual slices on a baking tray and cook in the oven for 10-12 minutes until crispy and golden…again. The pizza will last 1-2 months in the freezer perfectly fine.

There is no trick to making budget Hawaiian pizza. Homemade pizza is cheap, easy food and quite often mostly from the pantry.

Right, let’s cook!

pizza in pizza oven

This will make 4 good sized pizzas…

Ingredients for the dough…

500g strong white bread flour
2 tsp fine salt
7g or one sachet of dried yeast
2tbsp or a couple of good glugs of olive oil
2tsp sugar
300ml warm water

Ingredients for the pizza sauce…

1 can tinned tomatoes
1 garlic clove
oregano
1 tsp sugar
Squeeze of ketchup
Salt and pepper to taste

Toppings…

Pre grated mozzarella – 50g to 60g per pizza
Pre-sliced ham- sliced into small squares
Tinned pineapple – sliced into cubes

To make the dough…

  1. Put your flour and salt in a big bowl, give it a little mix and make a well in the centre…
  2. Put your yeast, olive oil and sugar into your jug of warm water, give a mix and leave for 30 seconds…
  3. Now pour your water mixture into the flour bowl and slowly mix and bring together…
  4. Once together – knead the dough until smooth and supple – around 10 minutes…
  5. Place your dough in a bowl and cover with a towel until doubled in size…
  6. Knock back and divide the dough into 4 balls…
  7. Cover and leave for another 30-40 mins to prove until doubled in size

To make the sauce…

While your dough is sitting you can also whiz up the pizza sauce. Put all the ingredients for the sauce into a jug and blend to a smooth consistency…

To shape your pizza…

To shape your pizzas take a dough ball and press with your hands and knuckles from the centre and work the dough outwards. Do this until you have your desired size pizza, about £1 coin thickness. Leave a small rim of dough on the outside of the pizza unpressed…this will rise and become golden and delicious!

To cook your pizza…

My preferred version these days, if im cooking indoors, is to start the pizza in a dry, hot frying pan and then after a couple of minutes put it under a really hot grill…

  1. Put your grill on max and get a frying pan on a medium heat…
  2. Get your rolled out dough into the frying pan as you would like, then spread your sauce on, add your cheese and then add your toppings…
  3. After a couple of minutes you can transfer the frying pan to finish under the grill…

Super easy and super cheap!
