Mulled_Cider

You cant beat mulled cider around this time of year. In our house we are not big wine drinkers so mulled wine usually gets replaced instantly with a few batches of mulled cider. Infact most of the weekends approaching Christmas usually involve mulled cider at one point or another.

Hot mulled cider is just what is needed after a brisk autumn walk. Its that sort of ‘sitting by a log fire’ in a cup thing isnt it?…

This spiced mulled cider recipe is brilliant. This mulled cider recipe is slightly spicy, sweet and citrusy with the classsic flavours of Christmas.

This mulled cider recipe…

Now the main thing I love about mulled cider is that you CANNOT get it wrong!…which is great for a beginner to the game like me! To make my mulled cider I took the classic christmassy flavours and added some citrus to them. That’s how my family like to drink it, so that’s what we make…

Firstly, you need to get 2L of good quality, dry cider…

You then have your basic mulled cider, quite Christmassy flavours…these inclde cinamon, clove, star anise, perhaps cardamon and nutmeg…

You then have the falvours which you can play around with a little bit if you want to develop some different notes in your mulled cider…these include orange, clementine or bayleaf…

You will want to sweeten your mulled cider…this can be done with sugar (which ever sugar apart from icing or pwdered) or honey

You may want to add a little tipple at the end like rum or brandy as you will burn off most of the alcohol as you cook it anyway…

I will probably update this recipe over the years as I develop it…

Ingredients…

  • 2 litres dry cider
  • 4 cloves
  • 3 star anise
  • 1 bay leaf?
  • 2 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange
  • 2 clementine’s
  • 4-5 tbsp light brown sugar or honey
  • to serve – cinnamon stick, star anise, 1 nice slice of orange or a couple of clementine

Method…

  • warm cider through
  • add spices and juices and then sweeten to your taste buds

Can I make this non-alcoholic?

You most certainly can. Just replace the good cider with good apple juice. I find a good squeeze of lemon is a good addition to balance the sweetness a bit….
